Mental Health Crisis in the UK?

Reading recent news and information about the mental health crisis left me feeling frustrated. It seems to have been a 'hot topic' for the past 3/4 years in the media. However, I am yet to read exactly what is being done about it. Yes, it seems there is an element of re structuring within the NHS occurring, with community hubs etc but it still leaves me thinking 'and what?'

It is reported that there were 3.8 million people in the UK in touch with mental health services in the UK 2023/2024. I read recently that a north west suicide prevention charity has reported a 'surge' in demand and a 'marked rise' in women reaching out. The charity (Martin Gallier Project) reported a 59% increase in people seeking intervention, compared to last year.

Whilst there is appreciation for charitable intervention, what on earth would this country do without it? Its frightening to imagine.

In my own neighbourhood there is incredible efforts made by CIC's such as MIND, The Brotherhood, Kelly's Heroes, Andy Man's Club (to name a few) and I am thankful they exist.

I then reflect on my own career and qualifications. The fact being IF there were career opportunities within the NHS for qualified person centred/integrative therapists I feel sure that they would have an influx of applications. The BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) recently noted 'We’ve urged the Government to tap into the underutilised pool of counsellors and psychotherapists in England.' I am encouraged that one of my own membership bodies seems to be lobbying the government in terms of trying to provide assistance with the issue of the mental health crisis in our country.
